Seizure of Contraband Tobacco in Gananoque

Gananoque – The Gananoque Police Service together with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and the Health Unit, conducted a joint investigation involving contraband tobacco trafficking in the town of Gananoque.

The investigation culminated on Thursday, January 13th when a search warrant was executed at 425 Herbert Street in Gananoque resulting in the seizure of 212 bags of contraband cigarettes with a street value of over $3180.00.

Police say there are charges pending under the Smoke Free Ontario Act, Tobacco Tax Act, and the Excise Act.

The Gananoque Police Service say that profits from illicit tobacco are often used by organized crime groups to fund other illicit activities. This seizure represents Gananoque Police Service’s commitment to the community to provide security and safety for its citizens.

They went on to say that they take very seriously the criminal activities associated to the sale of illegal cigarettes and are responsive to the concerns of our residents, civic leaders, policing partners and health agencies that these activities bring.
